The Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT) runs on a language model architecture created by Open Artificial Intelligence (OpenAI). ChatGPT was first launched in November 2022, and the updated version, GPT-4.0 was published in March 2023. OpenAI allows users free access to the GPT-3.5 version, while the more advanced GPT-4 version with newer features is provided to paid subscribers under the commercial name "ChatGPT Plus." ChatGPT is the fastest-growing consumer application, gaining over 100 million users since its release and contributing $80 billion in revenue (Brockman, 2023).
The OpenAI claims that GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, including passing a simulated bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers (Weiss, 2023). The versatility of ChatGPT in responding to queries at a level above the average human test-taker created concern about cheating on exams or completing coursework in schools (Villasenor, 2023). This prompted the authors to evaluate the impact, opportunities, and controversies of using ChatGPT in nursing education.
ChatGPT can produce a wide range of written content, including student papers and scientific manuscripts. Some believe that the language model ChatGPT is only good on the data it has been trained on; therefore, humans must always verify and validate the output (Stokel-Walker, 2022). This warrants more resources and training requirements for educators on ChatGPT, while others argue that educators should embrace ChatGPT as a valuable technological tool.
According to USA Today, several schools and universities have banned the use of ChatGPT (Jimenez, 2023), while the American Psychological Association is urging schools to train teachers and students about ChatGPT instead of banning its use (Abramson, 2023). Therefore, the authors, who are nurse educators, prompted ChatGPT on its use in education, teaching, and learning. In this paper, the authors have described the prompts given to ChatGPT with the responses generated by ChatGPT. The authors have supported the comments of ChatGPT with evidence. We hope this contemporary paper will create awareness among nursing educators and students on using ChatGPT.
