The Future Direction of Women in Nuclear Medicine and Nuclear Medicine in Women's Health

Nuclear Medicine can be an integral part of the future development in women's health. In the same manner, women play an integral role in the advancement of the broad field of Nuclear Medicine. However, many issues are still unsolved or hitherto neglected. Although these aspects apply in many cases to all ages, young women are key for the discussion for a series of reasons, that is pregnancy, work-related age and balancing the effects on the family and work environment. Considering all these aspects, several efforts are still needed from the side of the Nuclear Medicine community, in order to address these issues.

The objectives of the present overview focus on two major points, which are: (1) contribution of Nuclear Medicine to women's health; and (2) enhancement of the work environment of female employees in Nuclear Medicine. This covers: (a) enhancement of sensitivity and specificity of the imaging modalities improving early identification as well as reducing radiation exposure; (b) contribution to fertility preservation in women undergoing cancer treatment; (c) development of less invasive diagnostic methods for assessing pelvic and uterine abnormalities, such as endometriosis; (d) development of new radiopharmaceuticals or the employment of the current available ones with a main focus on women's health; (e) protection of female employers in Nuclear Medicine, by adopting new approaches; and (f) the role of artificial intelligence in Nuclear Medicine imaging.
