A 2-piece premanufactured glass-fiber post-and-core for a child with a severely compromised endodontically treated tooth to restore dental form, function, and esthetics, is described. A shorter chair time than for the conventional options was needed, and the post provided an adequate biomechanical response with a reduced intracanal cement thickness.
Section snippetsCLINICAL REPORTA 13-year-old child suffered from domestic trauma, and, on clinical examination, a cervical fracture of the maxillary left central incisor was observed (Fig. 1). The endodontic access cavity had been sealed with glass ionomer cement. The periapical radiograph revealed previous successful endodontic treatment. To enhance future restoration retention, treatment with a 2-piece premanufactured glass-fiber post-and-core was indicated. The 2-piece premanufactured glass-fiber post (Splendor; Angelus)
DISCUSSIONGlass-fiber post-and-core systems have been reported to have satisfactory clinical outcomes5 and teeth restored with these systems have been reported to have homogeneous stress distribution within the root dentin.6 The post-and-core technique described for this patient had a satisfactory interface with the root canal walls because of the accurate fit of the post and sleeve, with no dye penetration between the post and cement.7 The authors are unaware of a previous clinical report presenting the
SUMMARYThe treatment of a child with a severely compromised endodontically treated tooth is described. A 2-piece premanufactured glass-fiber post-and-core was used to reduce intracanal cement thickness. Clinical trials using the 2-piece premanufactured glass-fiber post should be performed to provide clinical outcomes of the technique.
